We’re still a couple weeks away from the official start of winter, but the season’s trademark weather has already picked up in some spots of the country.
Here’s three tips to keep your pet safe when the forecast calls for snow, sleet and ice.
1.Keep your furry friends indoors.
You might think that your pooch’s thick coat makes him or her impervious to the chilly weather, but fur only provides so much protection in below-freezing temperatures.
Like humans, pets can get frostbite and hypothermia when left outside for long periods of time, according to theAmerican Veterinary Medical Association.
2. Wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach after walks.
Winter weather often means treated roads and sidewalks, and your pets can pick up these deicers on their daily walk, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
3. Never go off-leash.
Dogs are more likely to get lost in the winter—likely because they can lose their scent in snow and ice, according to adoption site Petfinder.
Make sure you keep your pets on a leash when walking in a winter wonderland.
