It was a perfect match. The German Shepherd puppy starting up at Tanya Miller needed a home—and Miller and her husband were looking for a new pet.
“When I looked into those scared, soft, brown eyes I knew that she was my new baby,” Miller says. The couple was visiting a local animal shelter in the hopes of finding a companion when they met the six-week old dog. Loki, now two years old, may have never found the Millers without the dedication of animal shelter employees. “The staff was excellent and very friendly,” says Miller. The successful adoption is just one of thousands of examples of how shelters across the nation, and around the world, help animals every day.
National Cat Day on October 29th is the purrfect day to give extra attention to your feline friends.
Cats make excellent companions. They rarely miss you, but when they do, you sure know it. Awareness days such as this one urge pet lovers to adopt from a local shelter. The day also reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps reduce the abandoned population.
National Cat Day is celebrated on October 29. It was created by Colleen Paige to bring awareness to the number of cats that need to be rescued each year. Cats remind us that just when you think they’ve lost interest in you, they’ll turn around and melt your hearts. When it appears they’re too busy staring out at passing cars, chasing nylon mice, and sending tiny multi-colored balls to their under-the-refrigerator graves, they’ll somehow let you know that their very world revolves around you. Just wait. It’ll happen when you least expect it. Cats have their own timetable.
Did you know stress can make your cat shed?
Q: Why do cats shed so much hair when they go to the vet?
A: That’s a fascinating phenomenon. They’re just sitting there on the exam table and you pet them and wads of fur come off in your hand. What’s up with that? Your cat’s fur, literally.
At the start of the pandemic, concern was sometimes expressed that dogs would be disturbed because people were now wearing face masks. Personally, I was skeptical, from the evidence of my own highly reactive Pug. She’s attentive to small details – one thing she’ll always object to is a person who is looking at their phone. Nevertheless, she has never shown any sign of being bothered by face masks.
