Warm weather allows many pets to enjoy walks, playtime, and outdoor adventures. However, rising temperatures can also create serious health risks. One of the most dangerous heat-related conditions seen in pets is heat stroke.

Heat stroke occurs when a pet's body temperature becomes dangerously high and their body can no longer cool itself effectively. This condition can develop quickly and may lead to organ damage, collapse, or even death if veterinary treatment is delayed.

Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting, while cats often seek shade and groom themselves to stay comfortable. Unfortunately, these natural cooling methods may not be enough during periods of extreme heat or high humidity.

Some pets are more likely to develop heat stroke, including:

• • Puppies and kittens
• • Overweight animals
• • Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and Persian cats

Early signs of overheating may include:

• • Restlessness

As heat stroke develops, more severe symptoms can occur, including:

If your pet shows any signs of heat stroke, move them to a cool area immediately. Offer small amounts of cool water and place cool, damp towels on their body. Avoid using ice or extremely cold water because it may interfere with the cooling process. Seek veterinary care right away, since heat stroke is a true medical emergency.

The best way to protect your pet is through prevention. Walk dogs during cooler parts of the day, provide plenty of fresh water, and make sure pets always have access to shade or air conditioning. Avoid strenuous exercise during hot weather and check pavement temperatures before walks to protect paw pads.

Most importantly, never leave your pet in a parked car. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise very quickly, even with cracked windows.

Heat stroke can happen faster than many pet owners realize. By understanding the risks, recognizing the warning signs, and taking simple safety precautions, you can help keep your pets safe during the hottest months of the year.
