Summer is the perfect season for backyard fun, family vacations, and outdoor adventures with your pets. While dogs and cats enjoy spending time outside, hot temperatures can quickly become dangerous if proper precautions aren't taken. Preparing your pet for the summer months can help prevent heat-related illnesses and keep them healthy all season long.

One of the best ways to protect your pet is by planning outdoor activities wisely. Instead of walking your dog during the middle of the day, choose the cooler hours of the morning or evening. Not only will the air be more comfortable, but sidewalks and asphalt will also be cooler and safer for your dog's paws.

Before heading outside, check the ground with the back of your hand. If the pavement feels too hot for your skin, it's too hot for your pet to walk on. Whenever possible, choose grassy areas or shaded paths for walks.

Keeping your pet well hydrated is another essential part of summer care. Fresh, clean water should always be available, whether your pet is inside or outdoors. If you're traveling or spending time away from home, pack a portable water bowl so your pet can take frequent water breaks.

Shade and cool resting areas are just as important. If your pet spends time outdoors, make sure they have a shady place to relax. On especially hot or humid days, it's safest to bring pets indoors where fans or air conditioning can help keep them comfortable.

Even with precautions, pets can still overheat. Watch for warning signs such as excessive panting, heavy drooling, rapid breathing, weakness, bright red gums, vomiting, or unusual tiredness. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool location, offer small amounts of cool water, and contact your veterinarian immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and should never be ignored.

Some pets need extra protection during hot weather, including young animals, senior pets, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and Persian cats. These pets can overheat more quickly and should be monitored closely.

With a little planning, you and your pet can safely enjoy everything summer has to offer.
