Animal Pain Awareness Month: Learning to Recognize When Your Pet Hurts

As September comes to a close, we couldn’t let the month end without talking about something incredibly important for our pets: pain. Pets are experts at hiding discomfort, so it is not always easy to tell when they are hurting. Paying attention to small changes in your pet’s behavior, movement, and daily habits can help you recognize when something may be wrong.

What Are Some Signs of Pain in Pets?

Pain does not always look the way we might expect. Instead of crying or whining, a pet may simply act differently than usual.

Some changes to watch for include:

  • ►Sleeping more or seeming less interested in normal activities
  • ►Having trouble standing, walking, or using stairs
  • ►Avoiding jumping onto furniture or climbing
  • ►Eating or drinking less than usual
  • ►Hiding or spending more time alone
  • ►Becoming irritable or sensitive when touched
  • ►Licking or chewing repeatedly at one area of the body
  • ►Changes in posture, movement, or the way they carry themselves

One small change does not always mean your pet is experiencing pain. However, noticeable or ongoing changes are worth discussing with your veterinarian.

Senior Pets Deserve Extra Attention

As pets get older, it can be easy to assume that slowing down is simply part of aging. While senior pets may naturally become less active, significant changes in mobility or behavior should not automatically be considered normal.

Regular veterinary visits are especially important for senior pets. These visits give your veterinarian an opportunity to monitor changes over time and talk with you about your pet’s comfort, activity level, and overall health.

Know Your Pet’s Normal

You know your pet better than anyone. That means you may be the first person to notice when something seems different.

Maybe your dog no longer wants to play like they used to. Perhaps your cat is spending more time hiding or is reluctant to jump onto their favorite spot. These small changes can be important clues.

If you notice changes in your pet’s behavior, movement, or daily routine, talk with your veterinarian. Your veterinary team can help determine what may be causing the change and whether your pet needs additional care.

Although Animal Pain Awareness Month is coming to an end, paying attention to your pet’s comfort is important all year long. When it comes to pain, even small changes are worth noticing.
